Tyler Denmead is an Assistant Professor at the School of Art and Design, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Denmead has spent his career facilitating and researching highly collaborative community-based arts programs for youth. His research is broadly concerned with the public pedagogies of artists and youth arts collectives. His current research examines disparities facing youth in so-called creative cities.
He is the founder of the nationally acclaimed New Urban Arts, a youth arts collective for high school students and artists based in Providence, Rhode Island. Prior to his post at the University of Illinois, he was a post-doctoral research associate at the John Nicholas Brown Center for Public Humanities. In 2007, he received an MPhil in Education Studies (distinction-level) in 2008 and his doctorate in 2011 from the University of Cambridge. His dissertation, “Beautiful Little Moments” investigates the pedagogies of so-called community artists working with toddlers and their parents in outdoor settings. He examines how artists from Cambridge, Curiosity, and Imagination (CCI) use their bodies, time, spaces, materials, and words to create the conditions for open-ended inquiry. His supervisors were Drs. Richard Hickman and Mandy Swann.
